Faxaway (www.faxaway.com) is a service of Seattle, Washington based International Telecom Ltd. ITL offers several telecommunications services including online fax, voicemail and long-distance telephone services.

Is Faxaway Fading Away?

Although ITL’s site has recent content, the Faxaway website has not had a copyright update since 2009. That kind of thing always causes this reviewer a bit of concern, but doesn’t necessarily mean there’s anything wrong with the services the company provides.

It does mean you should contact them personally to get a feel for the company before spending money with them. As is true with any company selling anything, let the buyer beware.

Pay-as-You-Go Can Be Advantageous

Faxaway.com is a pay-as-you go online fax provider. When you sign up, you are billed a flat $10.00 deposit that is then charged as you use minutes of phone time. You are billed $1.00 per month as a maintenance fee, but other than that, you only pay for what you use and then only when you send faxes.

Inbound faxes and voicemail are free. Your outbound faxes are charged against your account deposit balance in six-second increments rather than in minute blocks as is true for the majority of online fax providers.

Local Fax Number in Seattle Only

Faxaway.com only offers phone numbers in the 206 area code. That means people sending you faxes who live outside that area will be charged long-distance fees by their carrier. You can spend another $2.00 per month and have an 888, 877, or 866 toll-free number pointed at your fax number. That way all of your clients and customers can fax you at no charge to them. The toll-free number is provided by another ITL service called Kall8.

Limitations

While the Faxaway service is very low cost, it also comes with quite a list of limitations. Among them are these:

• Outbound fax emails must be sent in plain text only. HTML is not supported.
• Outbound faxes using file attachments are limited to PDF, TIF and 11 text file formats.
• Microsoft Office files with the .docx or .xlsx extension are not supported.
• You may not mix file types if you are attaching files to be faxed.

When you weigh the limitations against the benefits of this service, there’s not much to say about Faxaway.com that is positive.
